Have you had a tree removed (and experienced the thrill of yelling out “Timber!”) and now have an annoying, stubborn stump that is preventing you from laying a new driveway or erecting that new fence? If you answered YES then NOW is the perfect time to rid yourself of those nuisance stumps using a stump grinder.
What is a Stump Grinder?
Stump grinders are powerful machines (depending on the size) and look like a typical lawn mower and circular saw joined together. They do the job using a high-speed disk with teeth that grind the stump and roots into small chips.
How Does it Work?
The operator guides the blade over the entire stump which shaves away at the wood and takes the stump down to below ground level. The blade’s teeth cut the stump into small chips that can be mulched over the garden or put in your green waste bin. You will also be left with a hole, so you could shovel the wood chips into the hole to decay or fill in the hole with soil so that it evens out with the surrounding ground.
Because the grinder chews stump wood down below ground level it ensures that your tree stump won’t re-sprout with suckering growth around its perimeter. This is usually the biggest benefit for using this machine as leaving a stump in place can mean repeated sucker pruning, a garden job that offers little satisfaction as you’re never done!
Top Tips
- When hiring a powerful machine ALWAYS make sure you are 100% sure on how to use it – if you’re unsure ask!
- Remove any rocks or large stones from around the stump, as these could flick up towards you or damage the teeth.
- Use protective equipment to protect yourself from noise and flying debris. Debris can be sharp pieces of wood and anything else that might be hiding in the soil e.g. old fence nails, old piping, glass and stones.
- Keep all children and pets indoors whilst using the stump grinder.
- Ensure that you protect yourself from damaging your property (or your neighbours), so it’s recommended moving all vehicles out of harm’s way!
